The proverbial 20c part bites again

I’m sure we’ve all heard about that cheap part that stands in the way of what would have been an awesome run & this is exactly what happened to Steven Reed in his Allstar Batteries Top Alcohol Funnycar, last weekend for the Nitro Champs @ Sydney Dragway.

The 1st run off the trailer for Q1 showed a great 5.59 E.T on the scoreboards but in the pits that run left a trail of destruction after a piston was torched. The team got in and did the hard yards to do a complete engine change. Motor change complete & after Q2 Reed still held position No 1 & so the decision was made that the 1st run would be their only qualifying pass. Qualifying complete & the 5.59 was good enough for the 2nd position.

With race day came a few upsets for Top Alcohol, one being Brett Whites dragster out running the Allstar Batteries funnycar when the air line fitting failed not allowing to shift gears & Steve had to idle as White sped past. That ended the weekend for the Reed team, but not far from their minds is the Winternationals in just 5 weeks, Reed says “Being my home track I'd love to take out this event for the 2nd time in a row, Steve Ham has set the bar high with a record breaking 5.46 E.T & we'll be doing our best to chase that down at the Winternationals.”

After this meeting Steve Reed remains 2nd on the championship leader’s board.

Adelaide February 2013

If Drag Racing isn’t fighting against the rain it’s a battle against the heat & when the temps hit the high 30’s this past weekend, that’s exactly what the teams had to do @ Adelaide International Raceway.

Top Alcohol had 9 cars enter for a 8 car field going into eliminations. Qualifying was hot & tough. Steve got the Allstar Batteries funnycar out there clocking a 5.05 ET over the 1000’ line.  For session 2 & 3 Steve laid down two 4 second passes, 4.96 @ 218mph & 4.92 @ 222mph which at the end of qualifying the Reed team were in position #2.

Round 1 of eliminations paired up NT’s Yak against Reed, this time the Reed funnycar took the win lights but no official 1000’ time was recorded. They then advanced into round 2 meeting Wayne Newby. Unfortunately,  before half track the ignition failed and shut down the Reed funnycar, allowing Newby to slide past and on into the finals. After round 3 of the championship series, Steve is well in the running, now 2nd with 6 rounds to go in the 2013 season. 2013 is going to be Reed Racing’s year.

Two on the trot!

Since taking the win at the season ending Winternationals, the off season was productive but time consuming and before Reed knew it, the nationals were fast approaching and time had run out to do some much needed testing prior to last weekend @ Sydney Dragway.

11 Top Alcohol funnycar & dragsters fronted to compete for the prestigious gold Christmas tree win. All 3 qualifying sessions were scheduled for Saturday and fortunately rain only delayed qualifying for very brief moments and all 3 sessions for group 1 were able to be completed.

Q1 was on the conservative side so the team could test all the changes and a 5.84 ET (elapsed time) gave them the bench mark to step it up and improve for the following 2 sessions. Changes had been made; Steve puts the funnycar down for a respectable 5.79 et after a big drive job and also broke the blower belt at the end of the run causing minimal damage to the Allstar Batteries funnycar. Q3 was yet another improvement with a 5.67 et well and truly putting Reed’s funnycar into the 8 car field in 3rd position.

Bring on race day!

The funnycar team proved to be unbeatable and gave Steve the perfect birthday present of the winner’s gold Christmas tree.

Firstly he knocked down fellow funnycar John Cannuli with a get out of jail free 5.6 after a brief snooze at the lights, 2nd battering came to Steven Ham when he was shut down with a leak on the line but Reed even with a solo ran a 5.6 et. Fellow Queenslander Jon Sting in his dragster put on a great fight but Reed’s 5.66 et was unbeatable in the finals.

You can’t start the championship season any better than a win with a very consistent car, team & driver. Thank you and congratulations to the team and for the sponsors continued support. We look forward to bringing you more success throughout this season.

Winternationals 2012

The biggest Drag Racing event in Australia took place at Willowbank Raceway this past weekend the 8-12th June. The Allstar Batteries funnycar was set to compete in the Top Alcohol category, but went into the weekend feeling a little shaky as the previous weekends testing plans had to be cancelled due to the weather.

Slightly unsure of the cars performance and set-up heading into qualifying session 1 on Saturday with a new car and computer setup on board, no one knew how the funnycar would run. And definitely no one predicted this run, straight after the launch the violent tyre shake shook off the steering wheel and slammed the funnycar into the wall, whilst in the drivers seat Steve unsuccessfully attempted to put the steering wheel back on and slid the remaining ¼ mile along the concrete barrier.

A few cosmetic touch ups and a new set of header pipes meant the funnycar could front up on the start line for Q2, doing exactly as it should have in the 1st run it ran a 5.65 Elapsed Time @ 254 mph.

Sunday was the last 2 qualifying sessions to seat the 13 Top Alcohol cars into the top 8 ready for eliminations. Q3 was unsuccessful with bad tyre shake and Steve shut it down. However further cementing the previous performance Q4 was successful with a 5.61et @ 255mph landing the team into 5th qualifying position for race day.

Race day Monday struggled to get under way as the grey clouds hovered over Willowbank Raceway. In the end the decision was made to continue running as so many of the categories championships had been left undecided, so now it was race day Tuesday.

The die hard fans were still there to witness some fantastic Drag Racing and this time the weather permitted the FUCHS Winternationals to be run in its entirety.

Round 1 of eliminations paired up number 4 qualifier John Cannuli and the Reed Racing team, a great funnycar match up but it was all won and lost on the start line with Cannuli’s red light handing to win the Steve’s funnycar.

In round 2 we see the funnycars taking over the Top Alcohol category when Steve met Steve Ham’s funnycar on the line. Ham could not beat Reed’s 5.65et to see the Allstar Batteries funnycar into the finals.

For the final match up of the season Jamie Noonan was unable to front up to the start line due to damage and therefore the funnycar had a bye run into the winner’s circle, Steve still pedalled the car to a 5.80et.

An awesome result for the team and with thanks to them for all their hard work this weekend and for the season. And what a successful season it was: with only 3 rounds competed at and a win, runner-up and a semi-finals loss, this is definitely the team to watch next season.

 

Race Results

Nitro Champs @ Sydney Dragway - May 2012

Sydney Dragway sure turned on the weather for the Nitro Champs this past weekend and the crowds turned out in massive numbers to witness the best drag racing Sydney’s seen in a long time.

Group 1 categories sat out Friday – Day 1 of the event giving the teams plenty of set-up time.

Saturday was qualifying for Top Alcohol with 11 cars ready to do battle for the top 8 positions. Steve put down a good solid ¼ mile run in Q1 with a 5.65et @ 251mph (405km/h). The Allstar Batteries funnycar heads to the staging lanes for Q2 and runs a 5.61et @ 252mph, solid enough to cement position 4. Reed makes the decision to not push the funnycar and risk damage before eliminations and not run the 3rd qualifying session. However the previous run of 5.61 keeps Reed in the 4th position for race day on Sunday.

Steve’s goal for the weekend was to put the funnycar into the 5.50’s for the 1st time, would this be possible for Round 1 of eliminations? YES it was. Paired up against the dragster of Brett White the funnycar’s 5.59 et @ 254mph gives the win light and a new PB to the Reed team. The team pumped & ready to go for round 2 of eliminations had Steve pair up against fellow veteran racer and rival Gary Phillips, the crowd loved a side by side funnycar run but unfortunately this time Phillip gets the win to a losing 5.64et.

In fantastic track conditions all weekend the funnycar put down some great ¼ mile passes. However without the teams hard work between rounds, getting the funnycar to the startline would not even be possible let alone setting a new PB.

It was a great way for the 2000 Camaro funnycar to be put into retirement whilst waiting in the background is the new addition to the Reed team, ready to launch the 2004 Pontiac Firebird at next month’s Winternationals at Willowbank Raceway.
